The Buzz Bus: Expedition to find out why some bees buzz pollinate

Buzz pollination, when bees use vibrations to pollinate flowers, has evolved in more than half of the bee species found around the World. But why some bees buzz-pollinate while others do not?

Funded by National Geographic we will be conducting an expedition in September-October 2022 to Australia in order to study buzz-pollinating bees. Australia is home to a large diversity of bees, including groups that have been poorly studied from a buzz-pollination perspective. For this expedition, we will use a mobile lab equipped to study bee vibrations, the buzz bus, while travelling across Eastern and Western Australia.
